It's just a list of things that you want it to do, and if the hardware has explicit support for doing those things, great. If the hardware isn't capable of it, it can only PRETEND ("emulate") doing that, it can't actually do it, any more than a lawnmower can pretend to be a Ferrari sportscar. OpenGL, Vulkan and DirectX are just a way of telling the hardware what you want to do. Same way that I could upgrade my own tape-player to one that can play MP3s but the device itself is only capable of playing tapes, so you need other things to do the hard work, and it wouldn't be as good, as small, as power efficient, etc. Though you could *emulate* that functionality on anything, you wouldn't have any ability to use that feature as a native feature of the hardware. This might include things like vertex shaders and the like that aren't in previous versions of OpenGL. In theory, nothing, but it would be INCREDIBLY slow, to the point of being unusable.Ī graphics card that supports a certain version of OpenGL has support for the instructions within that version of OpenGL.
